Democrats, Tim Kaine push to retake rural Virginia ~ from the Roanoke Times by Carmen Forman Apr 1, 2017
There’s a natural instinct for Democrats to avoid rural areas because those localities will likely vote Republican , Kaine said. But Democrats have to show up there, even if the goal is merely reducing the margin of loss rather than winning.
Democrats also need to abandon campaigning on long, “grocery lists” of policies, he said. Instead, tell voters your motivation to run for office. Focus less on the issues, and more on making a deeper connection, he said.
“If I know what motivates you, I have some basis for understanding your values, what makes you tick, and I have some basis for judging how you’re going to handle the emergency, the new issues we’re not talking about at all,” Kaine said. “And I think rural voters especially are real values voters.”
